Chichen Itza
The most famous of the Mayan cities and also the most mystical; it still has many secrets hidden in its structures, its walls and its decorations. Chichen Itza seems to have been there forever and yet even today amazing new discoveries are being made about its past history. It was once the most powerful city in the Yucatan Peninsula being the military, commercial and religious capital of the area.
The pyramid of Kukulcán, its most famous structure, was a place of worship for the Mayans, abandoned for more than 800 years it was devoured by the jungle and thus was again home to the flora and fauna that its creators once worshiped. It was also used as a defence structure by the conquistadors, finally restored by archaeologists and today admired by hundreds of thousands of people every year. Without a doubt Chichén Itzá is the eternal city of the Mayas.
